How to use the PCB Layout Cost Estimator

1
Prepare the project inputs

Keep the schematic, BOM, board outline and important mechanical or signal constraints ready.

Result: fewer assumptions during estimation.
2
Open the Cost Estimator

Click the Open Tool button after reviewing this guide.

Result: all 13 editable inputs become available.
3
Select board size and layers

Choose the closest PCB size and the required layer count.

Result: board-scale complexity is calculated.
4
Select component count and density

Choose the estimated component quantity and pin-density level.

Result: placement and routing effort is included.
5
Select package and high-speed details

Choose the closest BGA/QFN difficulty and interface level.

Result: advanced breakout and controlled routing are included.
6
Select power and mechanical complexity

Choose the real power, thermal and enclosure conditions.

Result: practical layout risk adjusts the estimate.
7
Select delivery scope

Choose review needs, documentation, urgency and review iterations.

Result: delivery effort and multiplier are updated.
8
Enter the hourly rate

Set Hourly Rate (USD) according to your service pricing.

Result: total cost and quote range update instantly.
9
Review the Estimate Summary

Check score, level, base hours, adjustment, hours and cost range.

Result: you receive a first-level sales estimate.
10
Qualify the lead

High and Expert designs should receive a technical review call.

Result: complex PCB projects are less likely to be underquoted.
11
Complete the engineering review

Verify actual files, constraints, critical interfaces and delivery expectations.

Result: the estimate can become a proper quotation.
12
Download cost details

Use the Download Cost Details button in the Service Rate section after checking all selections.

Result: the current detailed PDF estimate is saved.
Scoring guide

PCB complexity levels

0–14 pointsLow

Simple board with limited complexity. Recommended: Basic PCB Layout Package.

15–24 pointsMedium

Professional layout with moderate review needs. Recommended: Standard PCB Layout Package.

25–34 pointsHigh

Dense board, high-speed/power or strict mechanical constraints. Recommended: Advanced PCB Layout Package.

35+ pointsExpert

Complex product board requiring senior-level layout and technical review. Recommended: Expert PCB Layout + Review Package.

Cost drivers

What increases PCB layout cost?

BGA / fine-pitch ICs

More fanout and routing effort.

This design needs careful breakout planning.
High-speed interfaces

Needs impedance, return path and length control.

We should review constraints before layout.
High-current paths

Requires copper width, thermal and via planning.

Thermal and power layout should be planned early.
Strict mechanical enclosure

Fixed placement and clearance limits routing freedom.

Mechanical files are required before final quote.
Fast delivery

Requires priority allocation.

Fast-track delivery may need an expedited quote.
Full documentation

Needs extra release and checking time.

Production-ready output needs additional verification.
Multiple review cycles

Adds rework and communication effort.

We can include defined review cycles in the quote.
Missing inputs

Causes delay and assumption-based work.

Use our PCB input readiness checklist first.
Unclear requirements

Increases risk of redesign.

Let us do a short technical review before layout starts.
Lead qualification

Use the result for the right sales conversation

Best useUse this calculator before quoting PCB layout work.
Good CTAGet your PCB layout effort estimate in 2 minutes.
Service hookIf your project is High or Expert complexity, offer a free input review call.
Sales tipAsk for schematic, BOM, board outline, mechanical constraints, and critical interface list.
WarningThis is an estimation tool, not a fixed quotation. Final quote depends on input review.

Important notes from the estimator

  • Use only the dropdown and hourly-rate inputs in the estimator.
  • Do not treat the result as a fixed quotation.
  • Always review the schematic, BOM, board outline, mechanical data, datasheets, constraints, and critical signals before final pricing.
  • For High or Expert projects, offer a free input-review call before committing to price or timeline.
  • For marketing, use: “Estimate your PCB layout cost in 2 minutes.”
  • For sales, use the result to decide whether the project needs a quick quote or technical review call.

Important before quoting

This tool provides an estimate, not a fixed quotation. Final cost and timeline require review of the actual project files.

How the estimate is calculated

1. ScoreThe 12 factor scores are added to determine project complexity.
2. Base hoursLow, Medium, High, and Expert projects start at 30, 70, 140, and 240 hours.
3. AdjustmentAll factor multipliers are multiplied together and rounded to two decimals.
4. Cost rangeEstimated hours × hourly rate, with a suggested quote range of −15% to +15%.

Important: This is an estimation tool, not a fixed quotation. Final pricing depends on review of the schematic, BOM, board outline, mechanical constraints, and critical interfaces.
